Social media is not about:
Getting to more followers fast, getting twenty thousand people to sign up for your E-book, or getting to the top of anything. 

If you are participating in Social Media for those reasons you are doing it wrong.

Social Media is about connecting with like-minded individuals for a common interest.  Maybe you watch the same shows, hang out at the same places, or have the same values or thoughts.  Maybe you aspire to be like them so you observe and ask them questions.
